What it is

Training is the process of teaching an AI model by exposing it to data and adjusting its parameters to improve performance. For LLMs, this typically means showing the model vast amounts of text and adjusting weights so it becomes better at predicting what comes next. Training large models requires massive computing resources.

Why it matters

Training is why AI capabilities depend on data. A model can only learn patterns present in its training data. Training also explains why models have knowledge cutoffs—they only know about events before their training data was collected. Understanding training helps you anticipate what a model might know or struggle with.
