Temperature

Module: fundamentals

What it is

Temperature is a setting that controls how random or deterministic a model's outputs are. Low temperature (e.g., 0.1) makes the model choose high-probability words, producing consistent, predictable text. High temperature (e.g., 1.0) increases randomness, producing more varied and creative outputs.

Why it matters

Temperature lets you tune AI behaviour for different tasks. Use low temperature for factual questions, coding, or when you need consistent outputs. Use higher temperature for creative writing, brainstorming, or when you want variety. If AI responses feel too bland or too chaotic, adjusting temperature can help.
