Stereotype Amplification
Module: ethics
What it is
Stereotype amplification is when AI systems exaggerate stereotypes present in training data. If doctors in training images are mostly men, the model might associate "doctor" with men even more strongly than reality. AI doesn't just reflect biases—it can magnify them.
Why it matters
AI can make society's existing biases worse, not just replicate them. When AI outputs reinforce stereotypes, they can influence human perceptions and decisions. Being aware of amplification effects helps you interpret AI outputs critically and understand why mitigation efforts matter.
