Digital Divide
Module: ethics
What it is
The digital divide is the gap between those with access to technology and those without. In AI, this includes access to AI tools, the skills to use them, and representation in AI development. AI benefits may accrue to those who already have advantages.
Why it matters
If AI benefits only flow to those with existing access and skills, it widens inequality. Awareness of the digital divide helps frame discussions about AI access, education, and ensuring broad benefit. It's also why making AI accessible to non-technical users matters.
