What it is
Autonomous operation means AI agents working without human intervention for extended periods. A fully autonomous agent might monitor systems, respond to issues, and take corrective actions around the clock. Humans set objectives but don't supervise individual actions.
Why it matters
Autonomous operation is where agentic AI is heading for certain applications. It enables 24/7 operation and handling of more tasks than humans could supervise. But it also concentrates risk—autonomous systems need robust safety measures and fallback procedures.
