Algorithmic Fairness

Module: ethics

What it is

Algorithmic fairness is the field studying how to make AI systems fair and the various definitions of what "fair" means. Different fairness criteria can conflict—optimising for one might violate another. There's no single definition of fairness that works for all contexts.

Why it matters

Fairness in AI isn't a simple checkbox. Different stakeholders may have legitimately different views on what fair means. Understanding that fairness is complex and contested helps you engage thoughtfully with AI ethics rather than assuming simple solutions exist.
